Recovering planet radial velocity signals in the presence of starspot activity in fully convective stars

چکیده
Accounting for stellar activity is a crucial component of the search for ever-smaller planets orbiting stars of all spectral types. We use Doppler imaging methods to demonstrate that starspot-induced radial velocity variability can be effectively reduced for moderately rotating, fully convective stars. Using starspot distributions extrapolated from sunspot observations, we adopt typical M dwarf starspot distributions with low contrast spots to synthesize line profile distortions. The distortions are recovered using maximum entropy regularized fitting and the corresponding stellar radial velocities are measured. The procedure is demonstrated that for a late-M star harbouring an orbiting planet in the habitable zone. The technique is effective for stars with v sin i = 1–10km s−1, reducing the stellar noise contribution by factors of nearly an order of magnitude. With a carefully chosen observing strategy, the technique can be used to determine the stellar rotation period and is robust to uncertainties such as unknown stellar inclination. While demonstrated for late-type M stars, the procedure is applicable to all

Activity{Related Radial Velocity Variation in Cool Stars
Planets have been detected orbiting several solar-type stars using high-precision radial velocity (v r) measurements. While changes in v r can be measured with an accuracy of a few m s ?1 , there has been relatively little study of how other astrophysical processes, such as magnetic activity, may eeect the observed velocities. In this paper, we use published data and simple models to explore th...

We present the discovery and characterization of a giant planet orbiting the young Sun-like star Kepler-63 (KOI-63, mKp = 11.6, Teff = 5576 K, M⋆ = 0.98M⊙). The planet transits every 9.43 days, with apparent depth variations and brightening anomalies caused by large starspots. The planet’s radius is 6.1± 0.2 R⊕, based on the transit light curve and the estimated stellar parameters. The planet’s...

The discovery of planets around several solar-like stars by means of high precision radial velocity (v r) measurements makes it important to explore sources of v r variations intrinsic to the stars themselves. Such studies guard against false planet detections, and can guide planet searches towards stars with low v r \noise" levels. We explore v r variations related to stellar activity { the ro...

Aims. To investigate the astrometric effects of stellar surface structures as a practical limitation to ultra-high-precision astrometry, e.g. in the context of exoplanet searches, and to quantify the expected effects in different regions of the HR-diagram. Methods. Stellar surface structures (spots, plages, granulation, non-radial oscillations) are likely to produce fluctuations in the integrat...
